My memories of Petersham are quite different. It was a great suburb to be bought up in in the 1940’s 50’s &60’s. I would guess the population would have been more around 80% Australian. Besides the White Cockatoo Hotel there was also the Clarence & in Leichhardt, just over the road was the Bald Faced Stag, The Elswick & Radestocks (all still operating but apart from the Stag trading under different names). There were five Picture shows all within walking distance, The Odeon, The Olympia, The Strand, The Marlbora & one in Annandale whose name escapes me. The shoppimg was great. There was no need to travel to buy what you needed. (It has certainly changed nowadays though) The local school in my part of Petersham (Elswick Street) was Crystal Stree Infants.now in Elswick Street. It only had Kindergarten 1st Class & Second Class. When you finished there you went to either Leichhardt Primary, Petersham Primary or the Catholic School down at St Thomas’ in Lewisham.
In Elswick Street there was Quinn Park (still there) & a fifteen minute walk to Petersham Park. The small Milk Bar in Crystal Street (still operating) played a great part in my teenage years. (Just over the road from the Infants School). A Juke Box & a Pinball Machine & it was where all the young lasses that used to attend the Petersham Tech over the road (shorthand & typing) would have their evening break.
The Scouts down at St Thomas’ were great. I was one from 11 till I turned 16. First Lewisham Sixth Catholic.
    Great memories.

Great story Cec, I hope to one day revisit Petersham the same as you did and reflect all that has changed with the suburb.

Jasper, In what part of Petersham did you live and when. What schools did you attend,

    Bruzz
